My Letter From Oliver Sacks
I’ve just written a longform article for The Morning News about the time I got a letter from Oliver Sacks. But it’s about so much more. It’s a little bit science, a little bit personal essay, and a tiny bit biography. I’ve never fully told this story before, and it’s the first time I’ve shown anyone the letter.

This comment in your article:
“Even as young as five years old I recall slightly crossing my eyes to create convergences in repeating patterns (pegboard, chain-link fencing etc.) and watching how some areas appeared to float on a different plane as my eyes focused at different depths.”
took me back to being a little kid laying in my parents’ Toyota Corolla hatchback and looking cross-eyed at the upholstered ceiling that had a repeating pattern of holes. By crossing my eyes I could create a layer of the pattern that seemed much closer than the ceiling itself. Never have heard anyone else describe that. Thanks!
